Counselling - What does it Involve?
Counselling is a talking therapy. It can be therapeutic to talk to a professional about whatever you are finding Difficult or Overwhelming.
Giving yourself the time and space, in a Confidential, Non-Judgemental, Compassionate and Safe Environment to explore freely, your thoughts, feelings and emotions can be liberating and healing. This process can bring focus and clarity to your needs and how they may be met. You might not know exactly what your needs are and that's OK. Sometimes identifying them is part of the work.
Counselling is about being kind to yourself, not forcing anything and being heard. Experiencing Compassion, Understanding and Acceptance at a time when you need support may be just what you need.
The initial session involves me getting to know you better so I can understand you and your world. I am integratively trained which means I have a range of counselling skills that I use according to your needs. I have recently completed the year long Professional Compassionate Inquiry Approach training with Dr Gabor Maté which invites connection with the mind and body. Our bodies hold our truth including the memories our mind can't recall. The therapeutic value of this reconnection is to bring conscious awareness and understanding of yourself in order to then offer healing to yourself. Compassion starts with self but it's often easier to be kind to others than yourself. I may make offerings of therapeutic interventions from time to time but I do not set agendas. I follow your agenda, regularly reviewing that you are gaining what you need from your sessions.
Lost or Stuck? Wanting to move forward but not sure how. Held back by old emotions, negative or limiting beliefs? You might not even be aware of what's holding you back but just know that your life is not what you want it to be.
Realising and understanding that choices are available to you can be very empowering, enabling you to take control. Knowledge is Power. Understanding why and how you think and behave gives you choice. Choice to change or to remain the same. When considering change, a key question might be "Does this way of thinking/behaving serve me well?" If not, "What would serve me well?"
Change can be daunting and at times terrifying but also exciting. Dr Gabor Maté in my Compassionate Inquiry training said that we do our inner work to become Response Able. You will get to know and understand yourself and your ways of being in the world and I will invite you to meet yourself with compassion, love and understanding to bring in new ways of coping and being in the world. "Only where there is compassion can healing happen" Dr Gabor Maté.
Your future is in your hands/body, your heart and your mind. Terrified to open Pandora's Box? I get it, I really do but guess what? You're already carrying Pandora's Box around all the time and the contents are showing up in ways you might not even be aware of. Although you think the lid is tightly closed and secure the contents always find a way out - physically or emotionally they find a way and the release may not be a pleasant experience for you and may be the very reason you are here exploring your options. I will be with you supporting you and offering you ways in which you can release, let go and healthier ways of coping and being in the world.
